Bats

 Bats are mammals that can fly. They are the only mammals capable of true flight.




Why are bats mammals?

Bats are mammals because they:

  • Have fur
  • Give birth to live babies
  • Feed their babies with milk

 Where do bats live?

  • Caves 
  • Trees 
  • Buildings 

They usually sleep during the day and are active at night (they are nocturnal).

 What do bats eat?

There are different types of bats:

  • Insectivores → eat insects 
  • Frugivores → eat fruit 
  • Nectar feeders → drink nectar 
  • Some (like vampire bats) drink blood 

 How do bats find their way?

Bats use echolocation:

  • They make sounds
  • The sound bounces back
  • This helps them find food and avoid objects

Why are bats important?

  • Control insects 
  • Help pollinate plants 
  • Spread seeds
